HP Printer Problems

Problem: Some Hewlett-Packard printers, the LaserJet printers in particular, have caused problems when printing our web pages. The problem this addresses is that in some cases, the links (the green, underlined sections of text) on our pages do not print. This problem has been seen with both Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator.

Solution: There are two possible solutions. In some cases, this problem has been fixed by simply updating the drivers for the printer. You can download the latest drivers for your printer by going to the HP Technical Support Site and following the prompts. While this may not fix your problem, I would recommend that you try this step first. As always, please read the documentation that comes with the new drivers for installation instructions.
The second option is to change the graphic print mode in your driver settings. How to do this will vary depending on your specific printer model and driver version. You can either look for it on your own, or contact HP for specific instructions. I'd recommend the latter. You should be able to find the appropriate phone number in the documentation for your product. Alternatively, you can look up customer support information at www.hp.com. If you would like to try finding it yourself, you're looking for the setting to change the graphics mode to HPGL2. Following are instructions for changing this setting for a LaserJet 5L or 6L (PCL) printer in Windows 95/98.

  1. From the Windows desktop, select Start/Settings/Printers.
  2. Highlight the HPLaserJet 5L or 6L (PCL) printer icon by clicking it once.
  3. From the File menu, choose Properties and select the Print Quality tab.
  4. Change the Print Optimization setting to Manual Settings.
  5. Click the Settings button.
  6. Change the Graphics Mode to HPGL2 and select OK.
  7. Select OK to save the changes and exit the Print Quality window.
  8. Close Printers.
