Setting Up a bxohio.net E-mail Account

Due to the wide variety of e-mail programs available today, it is impossible to provide explicit directions for each program in setting up an e-mail account with us.  However, we can provide the required information, as well as specific instructions for a couple of the most widely used e-mail
programs available. You may select from the links below to go to the section that most interests you.

Most proprietary e-mail software (such as that used with AOL and CompuServe) will not work with your e-mail account here. However, you can still access your e-mail account here using a standard e-mail program, which can be run while you are online with your internet service provider.

PLEASE NOTE: E-mail addresses are available free of charge to our members through our system. However, you must contact us to request that a mailbox be set up for you first!

E-mail Settings

E-mail Address: username@bxohio.net
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): mail.bxohio.net
Incoming mail server (POP3): mail.bxohio.net

Your user ID will always be your FULL E-MAIL ADDRESS! The password will have been set up with you or your company's point of contact with us when the mailbox was first requested.
Please note that if we are hosting e-mail for your own domain, you will need to replace all occurrences of bxohio.net in these instructions with your own domain name!

Microsoft Outlook Express

The screen shots displayed below are from Outlook Express v5.50.4133.2400. If you are using a different version, the screens may be slightly different, but they should be close enough to work with.
Start Outlook Express. If there is no icon for it on your desktop, you can do so by clicking on Start, Programs, Internet Explorer, Outlook Express.
In Outlook Express, select the Tools menu, then select Accounts. When the Account window opens up, click on the Add button and select Mail. For an example, we’ll use the name John Doe.

Type in your name as you would like it to appear in the messages you send (I.E. John Doe). Click on the Next button.

Type in your e-mail address. Your e-mail address will have been assigned to you when the mailbox was first requested.  Typically, this will be your first initial and last name followed by the domain name, something like jdoe@bxohio.net. Click on the Next button.

The incoming e-mail server should default to POP3. If it is set to something else, click on the drop-down box and select POP3. The incoming and outgoing mail servers should both be set to mail.bxohio.net. Click on the Next button.

Log On Using: should be selected. The POP Account Name will be your FULL E-MAIL ADDRESS! Click on the Next button.

Click on the Finish button here. However, you aren't quite done setting up. There is one more setting that has to be changed.

On the Mail tab, make sure that you've selected the new e-mail account and click on the Properties button.

Select the Servers tab, then check off the box at the bottom labeled My server requires authentication. Without performing this step, you won't be able to send mail!

Netscape Messenger

This walks you through creating a mail account to access a mailbox on our system using Netscape Messenger. It is assumed that you have already created a user profile. The procedure should be almost identical if you are creating a profile for the first time.
You need to go into the user profiles program to do this. From your desktop, click on Start, Programs, Netscape Communicator, Utilities, User Profile Manager.
Messenger-1.gif (5623 bytes)      We're going to have to create a new user profile for the new e-mail settings. Once the new profile is created, you may want to come back in here and delete the old one. For now, we'll leave it there. Click on the New button. This brings up a windows labeled Creating a New Profile. Click on the Next button.
Messenger-2.gif (5759 bytes)      Enter your full name in the first box (I.E. John Doe), then enter your e-mail address in the second box. Your e-mail address will be your username followed by @bxohio.net. Using our example, your e-mail address would be jdoe@bxohio.net. Click on the Next button.
Messenger-3.gif (6370 bytes)      In the first box, give your profile a descriptive name. Perhaps your username (jdoe) would be appropriate. Leave the default in the second box and click on the Next button.
Messenger-4.gif (6554 bytes)      Enter mail.bxohio.net for the Outgoing Mail Server. Click on the Next button.
Messenger-5.gif (6464 bytes)      Enter your username for the Mail Server User Name. Enter mail.bxohio.net for the Incoming Mail Server. Select POP3 as the Mail Server Type. Click on the Next button.
Messenger-6.gif (5587 bytes)      We're not setting up a newsgroup server, so don't change anything on this window and click on the Finish button.
That's it! You're ready to try it out.
